Beach, cafés, hotel rooms or the car – holiday time often means taking the laptop with you everywhere. However, a study carried out by IDC last year shows that only three percent of stolen laptops find their way back to their rightful owner.

So for those of you who wish to hold onto your computer during your holiday, here are some laptop security tips from Kensington (www.kensington.com):

• First of all – make sure to always have a laptop lock at hand. Granted, a computer lock may not be the first thing that comes to mind when packing your suitcase, but the reality is it could save you from hours of queuing up at police stations or calling insurance companies this summer.
• Choose a compact lock that is easy to handle and carry with you on your travels. Locks with a cable that contracts or spirals take up minimum space in your bag and do not get tangled up in other wires.
• Using a combination lock will save you the hassle of keeping track of a key. For the forgetful among us, you can usually register your code online with the supplier.
• Always lock your computer when leaving it unattended. In bars and cafés, make a habit of always sitting in a place where it is possible to lock your computer to the table or chair. If you have to leave your laptop in the car, lock it to the steering wheel, the safety seat or the buckle underneath the seatbelt.
• Use a bag that does not look like a computer bag. This decreases the attraction value significantly, and could protect you from an opportunistic thief.
