Free “Cut & Paste” Security Policy

Free “Cut & Paste” Security Policy

23/07/2009

Whether data is lost or stolen from the office, at the departure gate or an employee’s home, the consequences are the same.

The customer will, quite rightly, hold the organisation to account. By incorporating the use and management of mobile devices into company data management policies and increasing the awareness and appreciation of the impact of data loss amongst their mobile workforce, they can, if not safeguard, certainly take steps towards reducing the risk of theft.

Our message is that the first line of defence is not the password but the lock. The organisations that safeguard their data most effectively are those that do more than simply issuing locks to their staff. Security is only effective when it’s addressed by management of technology together with people and procedures.

Physical Security Policy

To maximise the effectiveness of IT departments that are working hard to protect data with passwords and encryption software, organisations and staff need to recognise that laptop theft is often the cause of network attacks and breaches and take steps to minimise the risk of laptop theft in the first place.

Common sense policies combined with an office culture that fosters and expects lock usage can be quickly implemented. Ownership of a lock does not constitute having adequate protection against opportunistic laptop theft. You have to use it! Just like switching off the lights to reduce electricity use, we encourage you to set the example amongst your colleagues and throughout your organisation as so the use of locks becomes second nature.

Organisations will find that our policy document can be the catalyst of cultural change to safeguard itself, its employees and its customers. The independent policy is written by research analysts IDC and can be easily implemented by organisations large and small.
